Yes for Mass Drivers

The future of app-based drivers is in jeopardy in Massachusetts. There is a lawsuit that could end drivers' choice to be their own boss. Some politicians want to reclassify drivers as employees which could take away what drivers love most -- flexibility to choose when, where, and for which apps to drive.

To prevent this, a ballot question was proposed for the 2022 November election.

Goal

Provide new benefits, protections and guaranteed minimum earnings for app based drivers—and keep drivers as independent contractors. This would be paid for by app based companies.

Challenge

Passing a ballot initiative that would provide the goal. There is a lawsuit that could end drivers’ choice to be their own boss. Some politicians want to reclassify drivers as employees which could take away what drivers love most—flexibility to choose when, where, and for which apps to drive.

My Role

Working with the grasstops team, in laying the groundwork for the ballot, I wrote letters, made calls and held virtual meetings with over 300 municipal, opinion and business leaders across Greater Boston from July of 2021 to July of 2022.

Result

In June 2022, the Supreme Judicial Court struck down the ballot, on a procedural technicality. Advocates for the ballot measure are calling on the legislature to pass a similarly worded bill and/ or move forward another ballot initiative.
